Cultural capability through a commercial lens

A self-paced online program built for the modern workplace that takes you beyond awareness to the everyday behaviours that determine whether Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander colleagues belong, contribute and progress.

Today, only a handful of Indigenous board directors serve on large ASX-listed companies, and Indigenous Australians hold less than 1% of senior management positions. This is not a lack of intelligence or ambition, it’s an exposure gap, and much of it is created inside workplaces that consider themselves inclusive.

The research calls it benevolent bias, which includes well-meaning behaviours that quietly limit the roles, exposure and advancement available to Indigenous professionals.

However, history proves there is nothing natural about that ceiling as Indigenous Australians have a 65,000-year record of resilience and abundance. Culture & Capital presents that story with curiosity and pride, and asks every workplace to help raise the ceiling: removing the quiet limits on Indigenous careers so that ambition, not bias, decides how far they rise.

  • Format: Self-paced and online. Pause, sit with the content, and move at your own speed.

  • Structure: Modules 1–5 are for all employees. Module 6 is for anyone who leads or manages people.

  • Time: Approximately 4–5 hours for employees and 5–6 hours for leaders.

The full program offering is detailed here.

The Mawal difference

Indigenous-owned and accountable - Built and owned by an Aboriginal business, Supply Nation certified, with appropriate cultural governance behind every module.

Strength-based - Indigenous Australians are presented as strong, adaptive and commercial. Never as passive victims.

Beyond awareness, toward progression - Addresses the everyday workplace behaviours that open or close doors, not historical knowledge alone.

Both sides acknowledged - The tension some Indigenous employees carry in commercial spaces, and the well-meaning behaviours of some colleagues that quietly hold them back.

Curiosity over guilt - Engages non-Indigenous learners and keeps them open, rather than putting them on the defensive.

Research-grounded - Drawn from original historical research and developed alongside the Mawal Leadership Program, measured in partnership with UNSW Business School.

Practical and reflective - Scenario-based and reflective rather than click-through compliance, completed with a short quiz and a certificate for reporting evidence.

For Commonwealth agencies, the program does not require adaptation or interpretation to satisfy the Commonwealth Cultural Capability Framework obligations as alignment is built in. It ties directly to the three domains: Knowing, Doing and Being.
